HRM Lanlege Ekun II Olota of Ota-Awori Dr Abdulkabir Obalanlege on Friday handed over 25 acres of land to the Nigerian Navy for operational use.

The Flag Officer Commanding, Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC), Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, while receiving the kind gesture from the monarch, said the navy would put the land to immediate use even before a permanent decision would be arrived on it.

“On behalf of the Navy and the Ministry of Defence, we want to thank you for the kind gesture and the hand of friendship extended to us.

“We have the Nigerian Navy School of Music here in Ota which has gained global reputation and our first intent is to have a more befitting place for the full band and administrative quarters.

“We are mindful of the location we have and it will still require some budgeting and government intervention so that this place can be used for what we intend to use it for.

“This is why we have the commander special boat service here with us so he will come later to carry a visibility assessment of this place and we will take it from there,” he said.

He assured the Oba that the land would be put to judicious use as soon as possible.

Earlier, the Oba, in his remarks, said that history had been made through this extension of gesture to the navy.

He said it would be his pleasure to permanently have the navy in his town, adding that he knew they needed a bigger space, hence the gesture.

“The land was a gift to me and in turn I am handing it over to the navy because I know your presence here will secure our community and our community will also learn a lot from the navy,” he said.

He thanked the family that gave him the land, adding that the certificate and the document of the land would be handed over to the navy as soon as possible.
