Following the arraignment of the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on July 25, 2023, the Department of State Services (DSS) has expressed regret over an unfortunate incident involving its staff and those of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) during the proceedings.

In a statement released, the DSS addressed the incident and outlined its position on the matter:

The DSS stated that the incident that occurred does not reflect the professional disposition of the organization.

The Service emphasized that it does not, and will never encourage such actions and takes full responsibility for ensuring the conduct of its personnel aligns with the highest ethical standards.

Highlighting its deep respect for the Judiciary as an Arm and Institution of Government, the Service affirmed its commitment to not undermine the judiciary’s crucial role in nation-building, national development, and security management.

The organization further iterated its robust working relationship with sister security and law enforcement agencies, including the NCoS.

Acknowledging that undue overzealousness was displayed by personnel from both agencies, the DSS announced that it has initiated detailed investigations into the matter.

The aim is to identify the specific individuals involved and take appropriate disciplinary actions if deemed necessary. The DSS assured the public that accountability will be ensured.

The DSS vehemently refuted claims of breaking any laws in handling the Emefiele case and debunked efforts by some elements to distort the narrative.

The Service also addressed previous alerts it issued regarding plots to discredit its leadership. It reiterated its commitment to maintaining ethical standards, discipline, and professionalism in all its operations.

Emphasizing its core national security mandate, the DSS appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to support its efforts in achieving the nation’s desired security goals.

The organization pledged to remain focused on its responsibilities and urged unity among citizens in building a stronger, safer Nigeria.

The DSS also stated that Nigeria’s progress and security are collective responsibilities, and every citizen should contribute to nation-building with love, tolerance, and cooperation.

The DSS’s swift response to the incident demonstrates its commitment to transparency and accountability, reassuring the public of its determination to uphold the rule of law and maintain its professional standards.

As investigations continue, Nigerians remain hopeful that this unfortunate incident will serve as a catalyst for reforms that strengthen the nation’s security and justice systems.
