Rear Admiral Michael Gregory Oamen, a highly accomplished and decorated officer of the Nigerian Navy, has recently taken on the prestigious role of Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command. Born on October 1, 1969, in Zaria, Kaduna State, and hailing from Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State, Rear Admiral Oamen’s career in the Nigerian military spans over 30 years.
Commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant in 1993 after enrolling in the Nigerian Defence Academy as part of the 40th Regular Course, he has since gained a wealth of experience in both operational and intelligence capacities. His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, a Master’s in Strategic Studies, and a Master’s in International Affairs and Diplomacy from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
Admiral Oamen’s career has seen him serve in various important roles, including Naval Assistant to the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Commanding Officer of Naval Outpost Onitsha, and Director of Veteran Affairs. His international experience includes specialized training in counterinsurgency, systems thinking, and combating terrorism.
Recognized for his excellence, Admiral Oamen has received multiple awards, including the Forces Service Star and Meritorious Service Star. A member of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Institute of Management and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, he is known for his dedication to improving the Navy’s operational capacity.
Married to Mrs. Josephine Oamen, the Rear Admiral is a family man blessed with three children. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, playing lawn tennis, and watching documentaries. His appointment as FOC Western Naval Command places him at the helm of safeguarding Nigeria’s crucial maritime interests.
