The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has commenced investigation into the alleged assault of a bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, by a House of Representatives member, Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, in the Maitama area of Abuja on Sunday night.
Video footage posted on social media showed the lawmaker physically and verbally assaulted the driver, threatening to make him disappear, lock him up in his generator house and nothing would happen.

Abuwatseya from the video recording of the incident, was at the lawmaker’s residence to deliver a package and had asked him to come to the car to take his delivery.

Apparently angry that the driver had the guts to tell him to come to the car to get his package, Ikwechegh, who could be heard speaking on the telephone to the sender of the package queried why the driver would tell him that and vowing that he would not pay him for the service rendered.

As if calling the driver unprintable names was not enough for him, Ikwechegh allegedly tore his shirts and slapped him three times, boasting that he could make him disappear in Nigeria and nothing would happen.

Aware that the driver was recording him, the lawmaker boasted that he should record very well and mocked him that he should also call the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The video which went viral across social media attracted public outcry with Nigerians demanding that the lawmaker be arrested and prosecuted.

Reacting to the incident, the FCT Police Command said the driver reported at the Maitama Divisional headquarters, adding that the incident occurred at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.

“The FCT Police Command has received a report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters regarding an incident involving a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State. The incident occurred on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted.

“The FCT Police Command expresses grave concern over Hon. Ikwegh’s dismissive attitude toward the office of the Inspector General of Police following the incident.

“After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” demonstrating a troubling disregard for the authority of law enforcement.

“Currently, the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning.

“Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Olatunji Disu, has mandated a thorough investigation into the matter. The Command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases. Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken,” said SP Josephine Adeh, Police Public Relations Officer for FCT Command in a statement on Monday.
