The Nigerian Army has commissioned a modern Primary Health Care facility in Umuchieze, Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State, as part of its ongoing civil-military cooperation efforts.
According to a statement by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Lt.-Col. Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, the project was executed under the Chief of Army Staff’s Special Intervention Projects and is named after a former traditional ruler and retired Army Major, His Royal Majesty (Eze) Reuben Oguchi Okwale (JP).
The fully equipped facility features consultation, maternity, and laboratory units, a nurses’ station, solar-powered borehole and lighting, modern sanitation systems, and perimeter fencing—all aimed at boosting healthcare delivery in the rural community.
The project was facilitated by the Commander, Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), Major General KO Aligbe, who represented the Chief of Army Staff at the commissioning. He said the initiative reflects the Army’s commitment to enhancing peace and development through non-kinetic means.
Abia State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, who represented Governor Alex Otti at the event, described the centre as a beacon of hope for rural residents, especially mothers and children.
Traditional rulers, health officials, and members of the host community joined senior military officers including the General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Major General OT Olatoye, at the event, which is one of several similar interventions by the Nigerian Army across the country.
