Officials from the office of the Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Central Business Districts, CBD, have initiated a campaign to remove and clean up illegal structures and makeshift shops that have been erected under the Eko Bridge, specifically in the areas around Ebute-Ero and Ejalonibu within the Lagos Island Business District.

This action was taken in strict adherence to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive, aimed at ensuring that all bridges in the state, especially those within Lagos Island, remain free from illegal structures and activities that could pose environmental nuisances.

It also serves to prevent a recurrence of the unfortunate fire incident that occurred on the Apongbon Bridge last year.

Mrs. Abidekun Balikis, the Head of Administration responsible for CBD operations in Lagos Island, led the cleanup exercise.

She emphasized the agency’s unwavering commitment to enforce a zero-tolerance policy against street trading and other illicit activities under bridges and on roads within the state, as per the governor’s instructions.

According to Mrs. Abidekun, the current administration is making strategic efforts to transform the entire Lagos Island into a world-class business and tourism hub. She emphasized that they will not let the activities of illegal traders, street hawkers, mechanics, and miscreants derail this important initiative.

“These environmental abuses, especially under the bridges by traders and mechanics can no longer be tolerated. We are working with relevant agencies of government, trade unions and leadership of market associations to check these illegalities,” she said.
