The Customs Area Controller of Tin Can Island Port Command, Comptroller Dera Nnadi, emphasized the significance of prioritizing 24-hour port operations during an exclusive interview. Nnadi urged freight forwarders and shippers to embrace this initiative, emphasizing its potential to reduce demurrage and streamline cargo clearance.

The interview delved into the command’s ambitious revenue target of N1.130 trillion for 2024 and the declaration of 2024 as the “Year of Stakeholders.” Nnadi outlined plans to enhance stakeholder engagement, introducing a watch system to expedite the clearance of compliant importers, exporters, and agents.

When questioned about the revenue-centric focus and potential trade facilitation challenges, Nnadi defended the emphasis on revenue collection, citing Nigeria’s import-dependent economy. He assured that service delivery would parallel revenue generation, with a commitment to minimizing delays and demurrage costs.

Addressing the integration of 24-hour operations, Nnadi expressed optimism, citing the willingness of stakeholders, including the Nigerian Ports Authority and Lagos State, to support the initiative. He highlighted the use of technology, such as mobile payment apps, to facilitate Customs duty payments over weekends, streamlining the process for importers.

Discussing cargo scanning operations, Nnadi acknowledged the current limitations but revealed plans to increase the number of scanners at the Tin Can Island Port. He emphasized the importance of cargo integrity, noting that scanning should serve as a means to achieve enhanced cargo integrity rather than an end in itself.

Nnadi also provided insights into the reward system for Customs officers, citing instances of recognition and promotions for outstanding performance. He highlighted the incorporation of a legal framework for financial rewards, encouraging officers to excel in revenue recovery.

On the impact of lifting the forex ban on 43 items, Nnadi presented statistical evidence, correlating the ban’s lifting with increased revenue collection. He explained that the combined effects of new Customs leadership and the policy change contributed to a significant upsurge in revenue.

In conclusion, Comptroller Dera Nnadi expressed optimism about achieving the ambitious revenue target, reinforcing the command’s commitment to balancing revenue collection with efficient service delivery in collaboration with stakeholders. The interview provided valuable insights into the strategic initiatives and challenges shaping the operations at the Tin Can Island Port Command.
