In response to a recent surge in social media activities promoting what is deemed unnatural under Nigerian laws, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a press release clarifying the legal stance on unnatural offences and same-sex marriage in the country.
The NPF underscored the prohibition of unnatural acts, as outlined in the Nigerian Criminal Code Act applicable in Southern States (Sections 214 to 217), and the Northern region (Section 284 of the Nigerian Penal Code). Individuals found guilty of such offences may face legal consequences in accordance with the law.
Moreover, the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014 strictly criminalizes the solemnization, operation, and public display of same-sex marriages in Nigeria.
The NPF emphasized the need for citizens to understand and adhere to these laws, as any violation will be subject to due legal processes. The force is committed to maintaining law and order, urging all citizens to report suspicious activities related to unnatural offences or same-sex marriage.
Authorities encourage the public to provide crucial information to aid law enforcement efforts, emphasizing the collective responsibility to stand against activities deemed inhuman and against the nation’s culture. Parents and guardians are called upon to support the police in combating such practices, reinforcing the notion that these activities are not only alien to Nigerian culture but also punishable under the law.
