Fidelity Bank Plc has strengthened its contribution to food security and community welfare in Nigeria with the distribution of 2,500 food packs to vulnerable residents across eight communities in Uromi and Irrua, Edo State.
The intervention, carried out under the bank’s Fidelity Food Bank initiative, was held at the Uromi Town Hall in Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State. The programme provided essential food supplies to families and individuals in need while reinforcing the bank’s commitment to supporting communities through targeted Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
The latest intervention forms part of Fidelity Bank’s broader efforts to address food insecurity and support vulnerable Nigerians at the grassroots. Through the Fidelity Food Bank programme, the bank continues to provide immediate nutritional assistance to communities while contributing to wider conversations around hunger, poverty reduction and sustainable development.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, the Divisional Head, Brand and Communications, Fidelity Bank Plc, Dr. Meksley Nwagboh, said the initiative reflected the bank’s determination to create tangible and lasting value in communities where it operates.
According to Nwagboh, the distribution of the food packs was not simply about providing immediate relief, but also about strengthening families and helping communities build greater resilience in the face of economic and social challenges.
“Today’s distribution will provide over 2,500 beneficiaries with essential food supplies. This event goes beyond the distribution of food items; it is about uplifting lives, strengthening communities and supporting families with resources that contribute to their wellbeing and resilience,” he said.
He explained that the intervention was also aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2, which focuses on ending hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition, as well as promoting sustainable agriculture.
Nwagboh added that the Uromi intervention was deliberately structured to reach residents across eight communities, particularly families facing difficulties in meeting their basic food needs. He noted that providing immediate assistance remained an important part of the bank’s community-focused CSR strategy.
Beyond the Edo State intervention, he disclosed that Fidelity Bank distributes 10,000 food packs every month through the Fidelity Food Bank programme. The initiative is implemented in collaboration with 19 partners across Nigeria to ensure that food assistance reaches communities where the need is most pressing.
The Edo State Government also commended Fidelity Bank for extending the food intervention to residents of Uromi. Governor Monday Okpebholo, represented at the event by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Jerry Uwangue, described the initiative as an important demonstration of corporate support for community wellbeing.
Uwangue noted that corporate organisations have a significant role to play in supporting families, particularly during periods when household resources are under pressure. He said initiatives that provide direct assistance to vulnerable residents can complement broader efforts to improve living conditions.
“At a time like this, when family needs come first, this act of kindness demonstrates that corporate organisations have a vital role to play in the wellbeing of our communities,” Uwangue said.
He expressed appreciation to Fidelity Bank on behalf of the Edo State Government and residents of the state, particularly the people of Uromi, while encouraging other corporate organisations to embrace similar community-focused initiatives.
“On behalf of our Governor and the good people of Edo, particularly the people of Uromi, I thank Fidelity Bank for this remarkable demonstration of corporate responsibility and generosity. We encourage other corporate organisations to emulate this worthy example by giving back to the people and communities where they operate,” he added.
Beneficiaries of the intervention also expressed gratitude to Fidelity Bank and its partners, saying the food packs would provide significant relief to households and help reduce the financial pressure associated with feeding their families.
The Fidelity Food Bank programme, introduced in April 2023, is one of Fidelity Bank’s flagship CSR initiatives designed to tackle hunger and malnutrition while providing direct support to communities experiencing food insecurity.
Since its launch, the programme has distributed more than 300,000 food packs to beneficiaries across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, highlighting the bank’s expanding focus on community development and social impact.
Fidelity Bank Plc is a Commercial Deposit Money Bank with more than 9.1 million customers served through digital banking channels and its network of 255 business offices across Nigeria, as well as its United Kingdom subsidiary, FidBank UK Limited. The bank has also received several local and international recognitions, including awards for digital transformation, MSME banking, mobile banking, investment banking and SME services.
Through initiatives such as the Fidelity Food Bank, the financial institution continues to combine its banking operations with community-oriented interventions aimed at addressing social and economic challenges. The latest food distribution in Edo State therefore represents another step in its broader CSR programme to support vulnerable households and contribute to efforts to improve food security across Nigeria.
