The Nigerian Navy on Friday deepened its commitment to personnel welfare and infrastructure renewal with the commissioning of major accommodation and recreational projects in Navy Town, Lagos, as part of activities marking the Navy’s 70th anniversary celebrations.
The projects, commissioned by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, include a 48 unit one bedroom accommodation block for junior ratings, a newly completed 16 unit two bedroom flat complex for senior ratings and the modern Dolphin Golf Club House.
Speaking during the ceremony, Abbas described the projects as symbols of the Nigerian Navy’s transformation from modest beginnings into a modern maritime force committed to operational excellence and personnel welfare.
He said the projects reflected the Navy’s determination to provide a conducive environment for officers, ratings and their families while also strengthening support infrastructure across formations.
The naval chief noted that the commissioning was particularly significant because one of the projects, the 48 unit accommodation block, had remained abandoned for more than five years before his administration ordered its completion.
According to him, the Nigerian Navy would continue to prioritise the revival and completion of viable abandoned projects to ensure that personnel benefit fully from investments made on their behalf.
Abbas assured officers, ratings and civilian staff that more abandoned projects across naval formations nationwide would soon be completed and commissioned under the service’s ongoing infrastructure renewal policy.
On the newly completed Dolphin Golf Club House, the CNS described the facility as more than a sporting centre, stressing that it would promote professional interaction, social engagement and stronger relationships among naval personnel, veterans and partners.
He added that the recreational complex would also serve as a strategic platform for building camaraderie and enhancing the overall wellbeing of members of the naval community.
The naval chief, however, cautioned beneficiaries against poor maintenance culture, stressing that the long term value of any facility depends on proper utilisation, preservation and regular maintenance.
He urged personnel to take ownership of the facilities, maintain high standards and adopt prudent electricity consumption habits to prevent waste of energy resources.
Abbas also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as unwavering support towards the growth and modernisation of the Nigerian Navy.
He equally commended engineers, contractors, project implementation teams and workers whose dedication ensured the timely completion of the projects, expressing confidence that the facilities would strengthen operational effectiveness for years to come.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship WEY, Commodore Mohammed Alhassan, said the projects were initiated to tackle persistent accommodation challenges within Lagos Area, regarded as the cradle of the Nigerian Navy.
Alhassan disclosed that the four storey 48 unit residential building for junior ratings was completed within approximately eight weeks after construction resumed in March 2026 following years of abandonment, while the Dolphin Golf Club House was delivered two months ahead of schedule through accelerated execution and effective planning.
He further explained that the 16 unit two bedroom accommodation for senior ratings overcame major engineering and environmental challenges, including severe waterlogged terrain and weak soil conditions, with the use of specialised pile foundation systems to guarantee structural durability and safety.
In his vote of thanks, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha, praised the CNS for his visionary leadership and dedication to personnel welfare, describing the newly commissioned facilities as enduring symbols of comfort, unity and motivation for naval personnel and their families.
