On Friday, May 26, residents of Liama Community in Brass LGA experienced a moment of relief and celebration as the Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO officially commissioned a newly constructed Jetty Waiting Room. This initiative was part of the activities commemorating the Nigerian Navy’s 70th Anniversary.
The project, designed to enhance the welfare of residents and travelers within the riverine community, is anticipated to offer comfort and shelter to passengers awaiting boats at the jetty, particularly during inclement weather conditions.
During the commissioning ceremony, Captain SK Haruna, the Commanding Officer of FOB FORMOSO, explained that the absence of an adequate waiting area for commuters prompted the Base to undertake this project in response to the community’s needs. He emphasized the Nigerian Navy’s unwavering commitment not only to maritime security but also to improving the living conditions of its host communities through impactful projects.
The event was well-attended by a large number of officers, ratings, civilian staff, NYSC members, and prominent community leaders, fostering an atmosphere of unity and appreciation.
Chief Atuka Alangba, speaking on behalf of the Liama Community, commended the Nigerian Navy for this laudable gesture, describing the project as both timely and beneficial to the people. He acknowledged that such gestures had not been experienced in Liama for many years and, therefore, expressed profound gratitude to FOB FORMOSO for remembering the community. Chief Alangba also pledged continued support, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence with the Nigerian Navy.
The commissioning ceremony further underscored the Nigerian Navy’s enduring commitment to fostering robust civil-military relations while positively impacting communities within its operational area.
